McKenzie Stutzman, LM (Montana), CPM, CLC My connection with birth began from a young age, being born into the loving hands of a midwife at home outside Missoula, Montana. Later I witnessed the birth of a younger sister at age 7. I grew up being taught that pregnancy and birth are normal life events and that giving birth at home with a trained midwife is safe. After graduating high school, I began studying midwifery and my passion to support mothers, babies, and the family unit through the childbearing year was awakened. The more I learned the difference that a low-risk approach to birth can make, the more my dedication was deepened that every woman deserves to be respected as the decision-maker in her care and that most pregnancies and births should be recognized as the normal events that they are. I echo the sentiment so aptly penned by author Ashley Booth Young:
“Although the popularly desired outcome is ‘healthy mother, healthy baby,’ I think there is room in that equation for ‘happy, non-traumatized, empowered, and elated mother and baby’ “.
I was given the opportunity to work with many midwives (both LMs and CNMs), doulas, and hundreds of birthing families throughout my education and apprenticeship: 2013: Completed my training as a doula (or labor support person) 2014: Enrolled in Midwives College of Utah 2015-2016: Attended births in the home, birth center, and hospital settings as an apprentice midwife with 3 Licensed midwives and 2 certified nurse-midwives in the Flathead Valley. 2017-2018: Apprenticed with 2 licensed midwives and 2 certified nurse-midwives at a high-volume, freestanding birth center (Authentic Birth Center) near Milwaukee, WI. Graduated with a degree in midwifery and became licensed in the state of Wisconsin. 2019: Relocated back to the Flathead Valley and completed the clinical requirements for the Montana Direct-Entry Midwifery License. 2020: Joined Birth With Insight as a full-time midwife. Also became certified as a Lactation Counselor.
It is my joy and privilege to work with growing families, supporting your choices and being beside you throughout the experience of becoming parents.
